Run what you build
The person who wrote the deploy script should be the one it wakes up. Nothing sharpens your judgement about what's safe to ship quite like carrying the pager for it.
Sheet 04 ยท Company record
Robot Studios IT Consultancy BV is my company. It builds and operates my own software, and it sells the infrastructure experience that comes out of doing that.
Detail A
Robot Studios IT Consultancy BV was registered in Belgium on 29 August 2019 and has been VAT-registered since 1 September 2019. It's a besloten vennootschap, which is the Belgian limited liability company, with its registered office at Hemelshoek 277, 2590 Berlaar. The activity on file in the national registry is computer consultancy and the management of computer facilities.
I'm the founder and the director, and I'm the person who signs things. The company grew out of about fifteen years of running production infrastructure, and it still has that shape: I'd rather build one product properly and keep it online for years than launch five and abandon four.
All of that is public. You can look the company up in the Belgian Crossroads Bank for Enterprises under enterprise number 0732.991.584 and check every line of it against this page.
Detail B
I'm Mattias Geniar. Linux sysadmin first, PHP developer second, and for the last decade a business owner too. I've been writing about servers, PHP, DNS, TLS and the web on ma.ttias.be since 2008, spoken at conferences around Europe, and ran the cron.weekly newsletter for Linux sysadmins until 2020.
Before this company I spent years managing hosting platforms and shared infrastructure at scale, which is where most of the opinions on this website come from. I co-founded the website monitoring service Oh Dear in 2018 with Freek Van der Herten, and I built and ran the DNS monitoring service DNS Spy until 2021.
You'll find me on GitHub and X, or you can just mail mattias@robotstudios.be.
Operating notes

MySQL, Laravel, a Linux box and a backup you've actually restored from. A stack you can debug at 3am beats a clever one you can't.
If a project is a bad idea, if my estimate was wrong, or if I broke something, you hear it from me first. Bad news doesn't get better with age.
